Oscar De La Hoya Reveals Why Canelo Alvarez is on A ‘Decline’
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Pound-for-pound superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) is again gearing up to defend his undisputed super-middleweight title. He will ring in the Cinco de Mayo weekend with a sensational showdown against Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs). The fight will also mark the fourth time he defends his title after turning undisputed champion in 2021. As the fight date inches closer, a former boxer turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya revealed why the fight would see Alvarez on the “decline.”

He was recently a guest on the Breakfast Club hosted by DJ Envy, Jess Hilarious, and Charlamagne Tha God. In conversation, Charlamagne asked him if Alvarez was using Golden Boy Promotions to promote the Munguia fight.  De La Hoya nodded in the negative and mentioned that Alvarez had chosen to fight his fighter, Munguia. Moreover, he stated that the fight would even see a major change in the division.

“I think it’s the changing of the guards. I really do. I think Canelo is a great fighter, don’t get me wrong, he fights everybody. But every fighter has their decline, the wear and tear. Canelo’s had surgeries on his knees and shoulders,” he said.

De La Hoya pointed out that Alvarez had a tough time while fighting John Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs) in 2023. Meanwhile, Munguia had beaten Ryder rather effortlessly earlier this year. “So Munguia, being 27 years old, and Canelo, being 34, on his way out. I think it’s the changing of the guards,” he said.

De La Hoya also added that since Canelo is on a decline, it would be best for him to retire after his (potential) loss to Munguia.

“We could’ve easily derailed his career”

While Alvarez dons his gloves in preparation for the Munguia showdown, it looks like his long-standing beef with De La Hoya is still standing strong. During the interview, Charlamagne tha God delved into Alvarez’s previous appearance on the same show. Notably, he had mentioned that De La Hoya was “not the person that he shows.” Moreover, he had even questioned De La Hoya’s loyalty and stated that the sport was “all business” for him.

Addressing Alvarez’s statements, ‘Golden Boy’ mentioned that he was extremely disappointed with what he said.

“We worked together for like, what 11 years? I built his career. We could’ve easily derailed his career with the opponents that we chose for him. And he’s gonna talk sh*t about me when the man is down. You know when I was down and out, what six years ago, he wants to step on my neck and keep me down. And talk sh*t. Man, what’s wrong with you?” he said.

He then stated that if Alvarez felt that he was a bad person, then he wouldn’t deny it and added that he’s a bad person to him because he isn’t fond of him anymore. “What happened to helping me out? We’re fighters. We’re in the boxing business. So, do I like him? I don’t like him as a person. I mean, he talks about loyalty and this and that. This guy is jumping from promoter to promoter. What kind of loyalty is that?” De La Hoya added.
