Two things JC Latham said that would make Mike Vrabel jealous as former Titans head coach
Denny Simmons / The Tennessean-USA TODAY NETWORK

New Tennessee Titans first round pick JC Latham is a guy that Mike Vrabel would have loved to coach.

An offensive tackle with ideal size and staggering power. A dominant force at evacuating run lanes. As tough as they come. A football guy through on through.

During JC Latham’s introductory press conference with the Titans, some of the things Latham said made him sound like a folk hero on football form. I couldn’t help but think about how much Mike Vrabel would have loved to coach him.

There was a long standing rumor that Latham had once squatted around 900 pounds during his time at the University of Alabama. When asked if it was true following his introductory press conference with Titans media, Latham was quick to make a correction. "It was 1,000 pounds," he said.

For context, the all-time world record is just over 1,300 pounds, but official powerlifting records for men over 300 pounds is just over 1,100. We're talking world renowned strength from Latham on the squat rack, not to mention the two reps of 500 pounds he once hit on bench press.

Brian Callahan said he wants his team to look good getting off the bus and be well-built in the trenches. Latham is known as "Trench King" for a reason.

Just about every offensive lineman in football wears gloves during games. Gloves help with grips on blocks. They're good for injury prevention. They're also useful in case the lineman ends up needing to handle the football after a fumble or trick play. Look up a picture of your favorite left tackle, they're probably going to have gloves on while in the game...That is, unless your favorite offensive tackle is JC Latham.

Latham, like an old-school baseball player barehanding a bat, chooses not to wear gloves when he plays. Latham told the media that his hands get too slippery when he wears gloves. He prefers to trust his skin to "adapt to water" and "allow him to grip wet surfaces." The only time you'll see Latham with gloves on is...when he's bleeding.

"The only times I wear gloves was when I was bleeding," said Latham in his introductory press conference. "They told me, you get caught with blood on your hands, you got to come out. So, they made me wear gloves whenever my hands got blood on them or whenever I'd be like scratched up really bad."

How can you not love this guy? A former five-star recruit that lived up to the hype at Alabama, became a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft, squats 1,000 pounds, and only wears gloves if his hands start bleeding. What a savage. That's a football guy with the toughness required to excel in the National Football League.

Latham is the exact kind of guy that Mike Vrabel would have loved to coach. But instead of the folk hero that is JC Latham, Vrabel was stuck with the softness of Andre Dillard.

At least Brian Callahan is building his team the right way and acquiring players with some fire. Latham could be the anchor for a lot of really competitive Titans teams in the near future.
