Seminoles add depth to the defensive backfield Defensive back Omarion Cooper is coming home. After spending one year in Boulder with the Colorado Buffaloes and coach Deion Sanders, Cooper has made the decision to transfer back to Florida State.
The Buffs now have a spot in the secondary to fill So far this offseason, Colorado’s defense has been relatively unharmed by the transfer portal. Other than the departures of Cormani McClain and Myles Slusher, most of CU’s top-end talent from last season has decided to stick around for 2024.
There have been plenty of surprises so far during the NCAA Transfer Portal spring window. Hundreds of players have entered the portal over the last couple of weeks, including a few names that may be familiar to Florida State fans.
A starter for much of the 2023 season, Omarion Cooper got lost in the shuffle this spring. Now, he’s looking for a new home. On Monday, the senior defensive back put his name into the NCAA transfer portal, as did walk-on receiver Kendal Stewart.
Florida State has a depth problem at safety after Omarion Cooper and Travis Jay departed from the program to enter the transfer portal last week. With only two scholarship players that have experience at the college level, it's important for the coaching staff to address the position leading up to the 2023 season.

FSU football coaches worked to address roster needs in the 2023 recruiting class via high school players and the transfer portal. They met most of those needs with the lone exception of safety with the departure of Jammie Robinson to the NFL.

Eight different players recorded at least one interception for Florida State in 2021, including two then-newcomers in redshirt junior safety Jammie Robinson and sophomore cornerback Omarion Cooper. Under defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, the Seminoles gathered 14 interceptions total, an improvement from their eight interceptions in 2020.
There were arguably two breakout players on Florida State’s defense in 2021. Jermaine Johnson II came to Tallahassee via the transfer portal after two years at Georgia.
